Organic foods are U An example of a process that would not be considered minimal is chemically changing the color of a food. Because a food is natural, does not mean it is organic. Factual claims may be placed on the labels of natural foods such as hormone-free, free-range and the claim of natural itself. The Federal Trade Commission regulates natural food claims. At Winn-Dixie, our specialties are our USDA Choice WD Brand natural beef and pork and Sanderson Farms fresh chicken. This means you get the best of taste and quality. We now are proud to offer Naturewell beef also. Naturewell beef guarantees the qualities of humane handling, 100% vegetarian, corn fed cattle, no added hormones and no antibiotics during the last 120 days before finishing.

What are organic products?

SDA (United States Department of Agriculture) regulated through the National Organic Program and are produced according to legal standards. Historically, organic farms were kept local and most organic products could be found at farmers markets. Today organic foods are growing approximately 20% each year and are found in all markets. Organic foods are grown with no sewage sludge, artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic waste such as sulfur may be used for fertilizing and natural chemicals can be used as pesticides. To be considered organic, livestock cannot be given hormones or antibiotics, however vitamins and minerals may be given. Farmers of organic products also emphasize conserving soil and water to enhance the environment.

How do I know if a product is natural or organic?

Foods that are natural may state so on the label. Some foods that are natural such as fresh apples (non-organic) may not be labeled as such, which means it may be difficult to determine which foods are natural. Organic products may vary in the amount of organic ingredients they contain. Click on the links below to learn more about organic food labeling and natural meats.
