Plan a Star-Spangled Fourth of July Celebration
Break out the sparklers and red, white and blue decorations. It's
time to celebrate this most patriotic of American holidays - the 4th of
July.
If burgers are on your holiday cookout menu, try a new twist
on an old favorite - try our Onion,
Bacon-Cheese or
Mushroom burger recipes. Fire up the
grill for Zippy Barbecue Chicken and serve Old-Fashioned Potato Salad. In a
hurry? Swing by our deli for
party
platters, side dishes and salads
that taste like you've been cooking all day!
We also have some great tips for safe grilling. And here's a saucy
idea - check out our recipe for Basic Barbecue Basting
Sauce -- it will keep chicken moist and tender, plus add incredible flavor. It
slows cooking on the grill to make sure the chicken gets cooked on the inside without burning
on the outside. And for a dessert worth saluting, create a red, white and
blue flag cake or a fruit
flag. Too hot to bake? Let
us do it for you - besides cookies, pies and pastries, our bakery boasts many specialty cake designs,
each one tastier than the last.
Fresh fruits are in good supply in summer. So arrange a colorful
fruit platter. Carve out a huge watermelon in the shape of a basket, and fill it with different melon balls, grapes, blueberries, kiwis and
pineapple. You can pick up all the fruits you need in our produce department,
where you'll find our fruits are sweeter, fresher,
better than ever.

Fruit
Flag
Create a Fruit Flag for a patriotic, healthy dessert! Simply slice watermelon and jicama (a Southwestern root
vegetable with a slightly sweet taste and an apple-like crunch) into
strips that are 3 inches long by 1/2 inch thick. Use a shallow
rectangular tray or serving dish to hold your "flag."
Create a 2-inch-wide stripe of watermelon along the bottom edge of the
tray. Follow with a stripe of jicama and repeat until three-fourths
of the tray is covered. Continue making stripes to the top of the
tray on the right-hand side, to resemble the American flag. Fill the
left-hand corner with blueberries. Cut a few pointed stars of jicama
and arrange them on top of the blueberries. Serve with a salute!
Simply frost a rectangular sheet cake with white frosting. Add rows of
raspberries to create stripes. Arrange blueberries in the upper
left-hand corner, leaving some of the white showing through to create the
stars. Hail to the Chef!
